Market Insights: How Geopolitical Disruptions Can Affect the European Date Market

Why supply-chain resilience matters in the date trade

International date trading depends on more than harvest volumes. The availability of transport, reliable export routes, supplier communication and the ability to source from different origins can all determine whether products reach European buyers on time.

Why supply-chain resilience matters in the date trade

International date trading depends on more than harvest volumes. The availability of transport, reliable export routes, supplier communication and the ability to source from different origins can all determine whether products reach European buyers on time.

These risks became particularly relevant in June 2025, when escalating tensions between Iran and Israel raised questions about the upcoming date season. Mohammed Alamoodi, CEO of Daktyli.pl, discussed the potential consequences in an interview with FreshPlaza.

His observations highlighted a fundamental challenge for importers: supply-chain risks can emerge before there is any measurable reduction in agricultural production.

Different varieties depend on different origins

The date market includes varieties with distinct production geographies. Iran is an important origin for Mazafati and Sayer dates, while Barhi and Medjool are among the varieties sourced from Israel and neighbouring countries.

This creates different levels of exposure to disruption. A variety that is widely available from several established origins may be easier to replace than one closely associated with a particular producing country.

For importers, understanding these differences is essential when preparing seasonal purchasing plans.

Logistics can be as important as production

Even when fruit is available at the farm, exports may be affected by transport restrictions, airspace closures, shipping concerns or changes in freight costs.

These issues are particularly important for fresh dates. Some products require short transit times and careful temperature management, while others can move through different transport arrangements.

Barhi is a good example of a variety for which timing matters. Its delicate nature and sensitivity to extended transit can make air freight important for certain supply chains. Mazafati, by contrast, is commonly transported by sea.

A disruption to one transport route therefore does not necessarily affect every variety in the same way.

Diversification reduces dependence on a single source

One of the key lessons from supply-chain uncertainty is the value of having alternatives.

An importer relying entirely on one country or supplier may have limited options when exports are interrupted. Working with established suppliers across multiple origins can create greater flexibility, although alternative sourcing is not always straightforward.

Different origins can vary in taste, texture, size, quality, price and availability. A replacement product must therefore meet customer expectations rather than simply fill a gap in stock.

In the June 2025 interview, Alamoodi described Daktyli.pl's approach to diversifying supply and exploring alternatives for varieties that could become difficult to obtain.

This illustrates why sourcing strategies need to be developed before a disruption occurs. Establishing supplier relationships, checking product specifications and understanding logistics options all take time.

What should European buyers consider?

For wholesalers, retailers and food manufacturers, several practical considerations are worth including in purchasing plans:

  • Avoid relying on a single origin where viable alternatives exist.

  • Confirm expected harvest and packing schedules with suppliers.

  • Monitor transport availability and landed costs, not only the quoted product price.

  • Identify alternative varieties or specifications that could be acceptable to customers.

  • Communicate potential delays early enough to adjust purchasing and sales plans.

Substitution is not always possible. Buyers seeking a particular variety may prefer to wait rather than accept a different product. In other cases, flexibility in size, grade or origin may help maintain availability.

The importance of informed purchasing decisions

Geopolitical developments can change rapidly, and their impact on agricultural trade is not always immediately visible. Early concerns should therefore be distinguished from confirmed shortages or production losses.

For date importers, the objective is not to predict every disruption accurately. It is to prepare for different scenarios and maintain the ability to respond when conditions change.

Mohammed Alamoodi's June 2025 interview with FreshPlaza examined these risks at the beginning of a critical period for the date supply chain. The wider lesson remains relevant to international produce trading: resilient sourcing requires diversification, communication and a clear understanding of the characteristics of each product.
